What is Mobile Attribution?

The complete guide to understanding how mobile attribution works and why every app team needs it.

Mobile attribution is the process of identifying which marketing channel, campaign, ad or partner drove a specific user to install your mobile app or take a desired action. It answers the fundamental question: where did this user come from?

How Mobile Attribution Works

When a user clicks on an ad, the attribution platform records a unique click fingerprint — including device information, IP address, and timestamp. When the user later installs the app and opens it for the first time, the attribution SDK matches the install to the earlier click and attributes the install to that specific ad campaign.

Attribution Methods

Deterministic Attribution

Uses exact device identifiers (IDFA on iOS, GAID on Android) to precisely match a click to an install. Highly accurate but requires user consent on iOS 14.5+ due to Apple's ATT framework.

Probabilistic Attribution

Uses statistical modeling based on device fingerprinting (IP address, user agent, screen size) when device IDs are unavailable. Less precise but works without explicit user consent.

Click-Through Attribution (CTA)

Attributes an install to the last ad the user clicked before installing. The standard attribution model used by most platforms.

View-Through Attribution (VTA)

Gives attribution credit to an ad the user saw but didn't click, typically with a shorter window (1-24 hours).

Mobile Attribution vs Web Analytics

Web analytics tools like Google Analytics track website visitors using cookies. Mobile attribution uses device identifiers and probabilistic matching to track app installs across the app store ecosystem — a fundamentally different technical challenge.
